The Greenwich Village club was known as a musical laboratory: many of the genre’s most innovative voices like Chris Potter, Antonio Sanchez, and Donny McCaslin used the space for experimentation, building upon their jazz foundations to explore a world of funk, punk, and avant-garde. Richter strove to do the same during his time performing there. The band he assembled for his 55 Bar residency was a new combination of old friends. While each member of the band is a premier level talent in New York City’s modern jazz scene, the incredible history and energy of the club brought their music to new heights. The band’s chemistry was electric, and they knew they had to develop it further. The group has since played two national tours, countless shows in New York, and has recorded Richter’s debut album, Listen to the Birds, which will be released on Endectomorph Records on September 20th.
